League of American Home Owners
The League of American Home Owners (LCH)
was formed in January of 1993, by a group of homeowners in
Southern California who share a common interested in consumer
issues. They envisioned an organization that could provide all
homeowners with a central resource of information for home
remodeling, real estate transactions and financing. The League
is now a nationwide organization. While the organization is
based in Upland, California, it has members in 20 different
states.
The League of American Homeowners is a non-profit consumer
organization. LAH offers information services to both homeowners
as well as homebuyers in need of 'third party' assistance about
housing related questions. LAH office hours are from 8 am to 5
pm, (PST), Monday through Friday. Telephone number is: (909)
931-1653. You are welcome to visit the LAH website at:
www.homeowners.org.
In order to help other consumers with home remodeling or major
repairs, The League believes it helpful for members to be able
to acquire in-depth background information about the contractor
they are considering before signing a contract. This kind of
information includes lien histories, past legal problems (with
former clients), license standing, financial viability of the
company, references, proper insurance, etc. We also focus on
making homeowners aware of their rights as consumers when
engaging professional help. This includes knowing what should
and should not be in a contract for home improvement and repair.
To accomplish our goals, LCH has obtained homeowner access to
agencies which specialize in providing information to banks,
bond companies, and major suppliers. We believe that homeowners
spending large sums of money on their primary investment (i.e.,
their home) should be able to learn as much as possible about
any contractor they select to perform work. It is simply prudent
to do so!
