Home Improvement Tips For Seniors
For those of a senior disposition life sometimes gets hard. Things that used to be easy become difficult and ordinary tasks start to take their toll. This is why so many elderly people end up in care homes - not because of any particular medical condition or an unwillingness to take care of themselves, but just because age catches up with them. A lot of elderly people would prefer to stay in their own homes and find moving into a care home a frightening experience - after all, a life of independence doesn't easily change to one of dependence. It feels like being forced into childhood again and losing adult dignity. There are lots of ways to make living at home easier however, and these should be exhausted before a decision to move is made.
The first thing to be considered by anyone struggling in their own home is to downsize. Cleaning an entire house can be difficult at the best of times and, especially if you're on your own, cleaning just isn't something you should have to do all the time. Downsizing to a bungalow is the perfect solution for many people who've retired and whose children have flown the nest, and it means that all the living areas are on the same floor so they're easily accessible.
The furniture in an elderly person's home can cause problems. For example, a very low sofa or bed can be difficult to get up from if you've got arthritis. Luckily there are lots of products on the market, such as chairs that tip forwards and beds that raise electronically, to help you get in and out with ease. Along the same lines, there are walk-in baths and showers that mean you don't have to climb in and out of a bath all the time.
If eyesight starts to go then high contrast labels can be used as a reminder. These use colours that are easy for the visually impaired to see and can really help, especially if it's an unfamiliar environment. A good tip for anyone finding movement a bit harder is to put away or move some items in the home, like valuable vases left on side tables that are easy to knock into! This is just a precaution to make sure that beloved heirlooms don't come under attack.
A lot of houses have steps that are unavoidable, for example outside the front door. There's no point turning them into a ramp, either because of space restrictions or because it would still be a steep slope. A great solution is a hand rail - for many elderly people this is all they need to navigate their steps.
Many elderly people have help in the home, for example a cleaning or even cooking service. This means that everyday tasks are taken care of occasionally and there's a level of support there. Even someone doing their shopping each week can let an elderly person live an otherwise independent life.
All of these changes are relatively inexpensive, compared to going into a care home, and mean that a senior can enjoy their own home in safety and comfort. If one particular task is difficult, find a better way of doing it, and that way it never becomes an issue.
